The Buchan Group, The Mail Exchange
Architect: John Smith Murdoch
City of Melbourne | C54
The magnificent Mail Exchange Building opened in 1917 as one of Melbourne’s earliest examples of Classical Revival architecture. It was originally owned by the Post Master General's department and designed by Commonwealth Home Affairs Architect, John Smith Murdoch. Built to relieve the congestion at the nearby Melbourne GPO, the building was a conscious effort to modernise the postal system in the early 20th century. Today, the Mail Exchange provides a fresh and inspiring new canvas on which architects’, The Buchan Group, are designing the buildings of the future. The studio, located on Level 1 of the building, comprises a high-quality fit out over an area of approximately 2,000sqm. The fit out has reinvigorated the design culture of the studio through high quality fixtures, exposed ceilings, and a concrete look render on the public area floors. A sheer entrance curtain offers glimpses of designers at work. The open plan, agile workspace features a distinct central spine drawing designers together. Project teams sit in pods to enable better physical and visual connectivity, facilitating an integrated multi-discipline design philosophy, and creating a more engaging and energetic environment.
