Building Description

OPEN HOUSE EVENT HUB

La Trobe Art Institute (LAI) is responsible for innovative research, curating, collecting, exhibiting and learning, through engagement with La Trobe University’s creative and academic communities.

Our Bendigo Gallery is located directly opposite Bendigo Art Gallery and the Capital Theatre, the La Trobe Art Institute (LAI) is a multipurpose visual arts facility run by La Trobe University. The award winning building, designed by architect Peter Elliott, features two galleries, two sculpture courtyards, a tiered auditorium, meeting room and an artist-in-residence apartment and studio. There is a strong indoor outdoor relationship between spaces which provides a dynamic setting for staff, students, visiting artists and the public.

LAI’s exhibitions, public and educative programs celebrate the intrinsic value of art and the important contribution that creative practitioners make to society. LAI also embraces cross-disciplinary discourse and uses its exhibition program as a springboard for engagement with other fields of research.

Over the course of this six-week project, Master Weavers have led local artists, weavers and community members of all ages and backgrounds in a number of collaborative weaving activities, culminating in new and unexpected fabrics.
