Southbank Theatre is the multi award-winning home of Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) and an iconic building in the heart of the Melbourne Arts Precinct. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, learn about the inner workings of this significant cultural venue from the other side of the curtain.
Designed by ARM Architecture, Southbank Theatre is one of Australia’s leading theatre venues with some of the best drama facilities in the world. The facilities feature two state-of-the-art performance spaces, the Sumner Theatre and the Lawler Studio, as well as dressing rooms that fit up to 22 performers, a loading dock and workshop, wardrobe maintenance area, offices, function rooms and bars.
Since opening in 2009, Southbank Theatre has been host to nearly 300 events including the much loved MTC productions Jasper Jones, Ladies in Black, The Beast, Twelfth Night, A View from the Bridge and Macbeth. Some of Australia’s best actors have performed on its stages including Marta Dusseldorp, Jai Courtney, Lisa McCune, Sigrid Thornton, Guy Pearce, Christie Whelan Browne and Frank Woodley.
Go backstage at Southbank Theatre, the home of Melbourne Theatre Company, where some of Australia’s most beloved actors have graced the stage. A guided tour will take you behind the scenes to rarely seen backstage areas plus you can explore special displays of props, costumes and set models from much-loved MTC productions in the foyer.
