Waterfront: GLaWAC – Water Rights

Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) represents Traditional Owners from the Brataualung, Brayakaulung, Brabralung, Krauatungalung and Tatungalung family clans. It is tasked with actively protecting culture, lands and waters, bringing strength, knowledge, skills and innovation to this role.

We open the Waterfront program in East Gippsland with a very special series of connected events at GLaWAC’s centre in Kalimna West.

Join this panel discussion with Traditional Owners and invited guests to discuss and recognise the formal handover of unallocated water in the Mitchell River. The two billion litres of water returned to GlaWAC in November 2019 means that for the first time, the Victorian State Government has acknowledged that Traditional Owners have the right to determine how and where water is used for cultural, environmental or economic purposes. Panellists include:

  • Lisa Hocking: Policy and Program Manager, GLaWAC
  • Alice Pepper: Community Engagement Coordinator, GLaWAC
  • Erin O’Donnell: Water Law and Policy specialist – Senior Fellow, Centre for Resources, Energy and Environment Law, University of Melbourne

Recognising the formal handover of two billion litres of water to Traditional Owners.

Waterfront is proudly presented by Centre for Architecture Victoria | Open House Melbourne, in partnership with Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and East Gippsland Shire Council. Waterfront is part of Melbourne Design Week 2021, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
