Biology Building (18 Innovation Walk)
Architect: Kosloff Architecture, Callum Morton, Monash Art Projects (MAP) and Rush Wright Associates
Monash University | MU24
The Biology Building at Monash Clayton is a spectacular example of adaptive re-use and integrated sustainable design. Originally built in 1968 to a design by Stephenson and Turner, a new façade skin, entry canopy, foyer/gallery and landscape have breathed new life and amenity into the existing eight-storey building. Designed by Kosloff Architecture in collaboration with artist Callum Morton and Monash Art Projects (MAP), the new works address a failing brick façade, poor environmental performance and a lack of intuitive wayfinding and accessibility. The revitalised facility is outward-facing and inviting; delivers improved thermal comfort and performance; seamlessly integrates with its landscape; and offers future-proofed service ducts to enable retrofitting of additional research environments. Modular glass-reinforced-concrete (GRC) panels have been designed to improve building performance. This resulted in a 39% reduction in solar heat gain, a 28% improvement in thermal performance and has reduced cooling demand by more than 20%. Planting by Rush Wright Associates adopts the University’s native plant preference, incorporating water sensitive urban design principles, and responding to the particular microclimates of the site. A new foyer/gallery space features art from the Monash Collection, curated to complement the research being undertaken.
