Biomedicine Discovery Institute Foyer
Architect: Sibling Nation
Monash University | MU25
The Biomedicine Discovery Institute at Monash Clayton addresses the needs of the six main global health problems: cancer, cardiovascular disease, development and stem cells, infection and immunity, metabolic disease and obesity, and neuroscience. Its foyer, by Sibling Architecture, features the work of Monash Art, Design and Architecture students in motifs and textures that reflect this research, alongside interactive displays. The northern half of the foyer features a motion-activated timeline. Elsewhere, dichroic screens, holograms, 3D-printed models and animations stimulate and inspire the mind, and showcase how the Institute’s research accelerates the ability to prevent, diagnose and treat disease. Inspired by anatomical cues, the foyer is treated as a ‘nervous system’, coordinating actions and forming connection between cells. Amidst the central circulation spine of the foyer, clusters of seating in various formations enable encounters and collaboration in a unique and adaptable setting. The Institute is one of the largest and highest-quality biomedical research institutes in Australia, with more than 120 internationally renowned research teams working with national and international collaborators in 84 countries. The Institute is part of the three-institute Discovery Precinct, alongside the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) and the Monash Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences (MICCN).
