Christ Church St Kilda Anglican Church

Architect: Charles Swyer

South | S15

Christ Church is the central building of the Anglican Parish of Christ Church St Kilda. Dedicated by Bishop Charles Perry on 2 August 1857, in 2017 the Parish celebrated its 160th year in the community of St Kilda. An English Gothic Style building, Christ Church was constructed in 1854–1857 to the designs of Purchas and Swyer and enlarged in 1874 and 1881 to the designs of Sydney W. Smith. The first architect, Charles Swyer, came from England with the first Minister, Reverend David Seddon. The building has been described as “a very handsome and substantial structure in the early English style”. It was closed for a short period between 1880 and 1881 to allow for the addition of a new chancel. In the 1850s the undressed random-coursed sandstone from Port King, Sorrento, was seen as an experiment. Still standing 160 years later, Christ Church is a unique example of the use of this stone. The stained-glass windows are brilliant examples of English and Australian craftsmanship, showing amazing detail in their creation. The windows are fine examples of the changes in stained-glass making styles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The stencilled gold-leaf Fleur-de-Lis on the chancel walls reflects the heritage of Victoria’s gold rush days.
