In 2004, the City of Melbourne decided to embark on an ambitious plan to construct a new office building for council staff that would focus on innovative design and sustainable function. CH2 features green technologies incorporated into every conceivable aspect of its 10 storeys. They included a tri-generation system, chilled ceiling panels, natural lighting, green north façade, automatic night-purge windows, wavy concrete ceilings with high thermal mass, and a facade of louvres that track the sun. Never before in Australia had these principles been used in such a comprehensive and interrelated fashion in an office building. CH2 was designed on the idea that a quality internal environment, complete with fresh air and carefully selected materials, can have a positive impact on the well-being of its occupants. CH2 is the first purpose-built office building in Australia to achieve the 6 Star Green Star rating, where the minimum rating is one star and the maximum is six. During Open House Melbourne, the City of Melbourne team will take visitors through the ground floor foyer to the offices on level six, where the key design and environmental features will be explained, before proceeding to the rooftop terrace with spectacular inner city views. Please note the tour involves climbing several flights of stairs. Wheelchair access can be arranged by request on the day. Presented by the City of Melbourne.
