The Forum is Monash University’s premier ceremonial landscape, the site of graduand processions and historic student protests, and an icon and legacy of the original 1959 Clayton Campus Masterplan by Bates Smart McCutcheon. The original landscape featured formal paths and planting arranged to create a large open space amongst key administration and civic buildings. It became notorious for accommodating large student protests. In an effort to disable such congregation, ad-hoc modifications including changes to topography, winding paths, planting and water were integrated over time, diluting its civic character and function. Following the re-iteration of the landscape’s symbolic significance and function, the University held a design competition to re-imagine the Forum, resulting in a contemporary interpretation of the landscape. Taylor Cullity Lethlean and Peter Elliott Architecture and Urban Design were appointed to deliver their winning design, and the eastern portion of the Forum comprises stage one of that redevelopment. The design re-introduces the Forum as a grand ceremonial setting. Eloquent land bridges assist in defining path hierarchy, while the water feature acts as a threshold between the Forum and Matheson Library forecourt. Sunken lawns provide a green setting for relaxation whilst reinforcing Chancellor’s Walk as a significant formal axis aligned with the historic Leonard French rose window and Robert Blackwood Hall.
