Jaques Richmond

Architect: Fender Katsalidis

City of Yarra | Y10

Jaques Richmond is a new residential precinct in the heart of Richmond. Built over three stages between 2012 and 2017, Jaques contains 377 expertly crafted and environmentally conscious apartments and townhouses that tell a remarkable story of urban regeneration. Bound by Griffiths, Coppin, Highett and Palmer Street, this one-hectare island site has proved to be the jewel of the crown in Richmond. Formally the Jaques Bros Foundry – an engineering business that produced rock-crushing machinery from 1885–1997 – this residential development has transformed an industrial relic into a contemporary piece of architecture that is sympathetic to its surrounding streetscape and provides the community with much needed inner-city urban living. Jaques machinery is still being produced and continues to make a significant contribution to Australian industries. The Bendigo gold mine currently uses Jaques equipment and Melbourne’s City Loop train tunnels were excavated using a Jaques burrowing machine. Integrated in Stage One along Highett street is the original brick façade to the former foundry, with the original entrance tower on the corner of Griffiths and Palmer Street retained and repurposed. This entrance tower once teemed with hundreds of workers over the 112 years the foundry occupied the site and is now a place of remembrance. Jaques is the proud winner of the 2017 UDIA ‘Award for Excellence in Urban Renewal (Victoria)’ and the 2018 IPA for ‘Best Residential Australia’.
