Jewish Museum of Australia

Architect: Grodski Architects

South | S09

The Jewish Museum of Australia is an inclusive, interactive Museum which explores and celebrates being Jewish in an Australian context. With four permanent galleries and two changing exhibition spaces, the Museum brings to life the diversity of Jewish culture and Australian Jewish life. The Museum was established in 1982. In 1992, after 13 years located in the synagogue of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, South Yarra, the inaugural Building Committee purchased an unassuming 1970s office block at 26 Alma Road, St Kilda, with a view to converting it into a museum. Robert Grodski Architects, under the direction of Charles Justin from Synman, Justin, Bialek (SJB) designed the conversion. The result is a stylish, well-laid-out and well-equipped, contemporary museum. Filtered light and limited direct sun keeps the temperature stable, and low-maintenance gardens keep water use to a minimum. During Open House Melbourne 2018, the Jewish Museum will offer regular tours through the curatorial area, St Kilda Synagogue, the permanent exhibitions, as well as the latest temporary exhibition Love and Legacy. Special programs accompanying the Love and Legacy exhibition will also be on offer throughout the day as part of the Multicultural Museums Victoria ‘Grandmothers’ project.
