Koorie Heritage Trust
Architect: Lyons Architecture with Indigenous Architecture and Design Victoria
City of Melbourne | C11
The Koorie Heritage Trust is a community owned and run Indigenous gallery and cultural centre celebrating the continuing journey of the Aboriginal Peoples of South Eastern Australia. It presents a range of programs including changing exhibitions, events, walking tours, family history services, cultural awareness training and education workshops, houses a collection of historic and contemporary artworks, objects, photographic archives, and oral histories relating to Victorian Aboriginal cultures and communities. The organisation relocated to Federation Square in July 2015, marking a significant move from the literal and figurative fringes of Melbourne to the ‘cultural centre’ of the city. This relocation project was designed in collaboration by Lyons and Indigenous Architecture and Design Victoria to reflect Koorie design and culture throughout the building; it includes a gallery, retail shop, library and a permanent collection displayed throughout the public spaces.
The Trust will be moving once more to new Federation Square premises in the near future, making way for the Apple store. Come take a look at this groundbreaking design before it disappears.
