MacKillop Family Services

Architect: George & Snyder, Leonard Terry

South | S20

Originally opened as the St Vincent de Paul’s Orphanage in 1857, 237 Cecil St is now the home to MacKillop Family Services. MacKillop continues to support children and young people in care through its foster care and residential care services, and provides family, disability and education services to support and strengthen families across Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. Today the building is home to MacKillop’s Heritage and Information service and display; Psychology Clinic; support services; and the southern out-of-home care team. The Heritage Display features information and artefacts from the orphanage as well as other receiving homes and orphanages run by MacKillop’s founding congregations, the Sisters of St Mercy, the Sisters of St Joseph and the Christian Brothers. The building also hosts international human rights organisation Hagar and multimedia organisation Fraynework Multimedia. The historic building exhibits the internal architecture reminiscent of the mid-1800s, and its stained-glass windowed Chapel continues to be used for MacKillop and sector-wide events.
