Marilyn Rowe House – The Australian Ballet School’s Student Residence

Architect: MGS Architect

City of Melbourne | R11

Marilyn Rowe House, The Australian Ballet School Student Residence, is a realisation of a long-held dream of Marilyn Rowe OBE – one of its first students, prima ballerina, and former director. The Student Residence allows students aged 13–16 to live in a safe and secure environment after moving to Melbourne to pursue their dancing dreams. Students of The Australian Ballet School come from all over Australia – 78% from outside Victoria – with a small number from overseas. Marilyn Rowe House is a home away from home, for up to 38 young dancers aged 13 and above from across Australia and the world who are provided with the holistic care they need to flourish. A grand Queen Anne house on Parkville’s ‘golden mile,’ the house was built in 1914 by a chaff-and-grain merchant. Stylistically, the house features austere features of the Federation period overlaying the simpler details of a Californian bungalow. The house was purchased by The Australian Ballet School on 24 May, 2014. Following renovation by MGS Architects, Marilyn Rowe House was officially opened on 30 January 2016 by the Governor-General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC.
