Menzies Building

Architect: Eggleston MacDonald & Secomb Architects, Design Inc

Monash University | MU27

Built in 1962, the iconic Menzies Building was once claimed to be the largest university facility in Australia, standing more than 50 metres tall. Its modernist design and innovative building features meant that, in its prime, the Menzies was highly regarded for its architectural brilliance. It was named after the Prime Minister who set in motion the political impetus that led to Monash becoming Victoria’s second university. Designed by Eggleston MacDonald and Secomb, the Menzies has 12 levels of staff offices and student tutorial rooms, with major lecture theatres located at ground level. In 2012, a major redevelopment of the building was undertaken by DesignInc to improve the quality of internal environments aligned with emerging trends in education. The centrepiece of the new design is an expansive new foyer that takes the place of the original escalators. An estimated 3,000 staff and students who move through the building each day now have four new lifts to transport them. Those who favour the scenic route can enjoy sweeping staircases offering panoramic views east and west. Lobby areas on each floor provide breakout spaces for staff and students. The Menzies is on the local heritage overlay (H084) as a locally significant building.
