Monash Art, Design and Architecture Workshops & SensiLab
Architect: NMBW, Studio Roland Snooks
Monash University | MU04
MADA Workshops and SensiLab occupy the ground-floor plane of three buildings – D, E and G – at Monash Caulfield, collectively comprising the Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) precinct. A comprehensive redevelopment of these spaces was undertaken in 2017 to deliver enhanced teaching, learning and research environments including cutting-edge robotics, modelling and visualisation equipment. Designed by architects NMBW and Studio Roland Snooks, these new environments offer flexible indoor-outdoor work, study and research spaces that readily extend into adjacent ‘working courtyards’ and landscapes. The refurbishment adopts a sensitive approach to building adaptation – complementing the existing design language established by Denton Corker Marshall for the iconic Building G in 1999, and the heritage-listed Classical Revival style of Building D, built in 1922. Larger openings throughout the precinct enable greater visual and physical connectivity across disciplines and work areas and facilitate increased day-lighting of interior spaces. The incorporation of SensiLab , a Faculty of Information Technology initiative in collaboration with Art, Design and Architecture, at the main entrance to Building G assists to improve faculty engagement and outreach. SensiLab is a specialised and technology-rich facility for creative collaboration and multidisciplinary research. The Lab integrates state-of-the-art audio-visualisation systems along with the latest fabrication technologies in an adaptive and dynamic world-class environment.
