MPavilion 2017

Architect: OMA, Rem Koolhaas & David Gianotten

Monash University | MU22

MPavilion 2017 is a new civic space, cultural laboratory and event hub at Clayton. It is a contemporary, exible, sheltered pavilion embedded in the landscape and takes design cues from ancient outdoor amphitheatres. The structure comprises two grandstands within a circular amphitheatre and a rotatable tribune that transforms the pavilion from an intimate enclosure into an outdoor stage. Adjacent landscape berms provide an e ective noise and visual bu er to the surrounding context, insulating the 24×24-metre space within. An aluminium-clad, steel ceiling grid, adorned with lighting, provides further opportunities to de ne and activate the space, and supports a translucent all-weather roof. MPavilion 2017 is an initiative of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and is supported by the City of Melbourne, the Victorian State Government and ANZ. The MPavilion 2017 was designed by Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of world-renowned practice OMA. The Pavilion was relocated from its temporary site in Queen Victoria Gardens to Monash Clayton with assistance from The Naomi Milgrom Foundation, City of Melbourne and Monash University.
