Southern Precinct Landscape
Architect: ASPECT Studios
Monash University | MU23
Stitching together the regionally signi cant Monash Transport Interchange, Alexander Theatre, Learning and Teaching Building, and heritage-listed Menzies Building, the Southern Precinct Landscape at Monash Clayton, has rede ned the campus front door and how it is experienced. Designed by Aspect Studios, the landscape covers an immense 2.5 hectares, delivering seamless transitions from adjoining cultural, research and learning spaces. It also delivers cyclist and pedestrian paths, outdoor learning spaces, and public artworks that contribute to the Monash Masterplan vision for a vibrant morning to midnight campus. The Clayton Transport Interchange is one of the largest in Australia and was collaboratively designed by John Wardle Architects and McGregor Coxall to transform the public transport arrival experience to Clayton. An integrated artwork by Megan Cope creates a site of welcome for all visitors and acknowledges the importance and ongoing evolution of Indigenous language, architecture, knowledge and culture. An open woodland located along Wellington Road has replaced an expansive at-grade car park. You may notice the grid of Angophora costata (Smooth Barked Apple), Lophostemon confertus (Queensland Brush Box) and Corymbia eximia (Yellow Bloodwood) – these trees sit atop the campus first underground car park. Each tree has been strategically planted directly above structural columns, evenly distributing weight whilst achieving the University’s desire to increase tree canopy cover.
