Based on a conscious decision to maintain the character of the street, the Stealth House is an extension to the rear of an existing post-war weatherboard home in West Footscray. Like its aeronautical namesake, the form of the house is memorable, yet when it needs to be, is invisible. Modern amenities and a large, open living space are spliced into the rear of the house to accommodate the growing family and their activities. The angular cut to the pitched roof creates the feature form as well as maximizing natural light from the north and east for the living spaces. It also creates a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces for the owners to inhabit and display their art and furniture collection. The bulk of the materials are reclaimed or recycled. Timber being the main material used. This is a labour of love by owner and builder – a highly skilled furniture maker – and the results show in all the meticulous timber detailing of the home.
