The Dream Factory

City of Maribyrnong | M04

Book Now

Since its construction in the late 1800s, The Dream Factory has been a trailblazing rubber factory, one of Australia’s largest cotton mills, a Global Villages warehouse complex (where countless infamous rave parties took place), and the headquarters of travel publisher Lonely Planet. Today, it is a co-working space that plays host to many established and emerging organisations, businesses and initiatives, including Engineers Without Borders, DATTA Vic, Snobal, cohealth, and FAB9. As an extensive and thoroughly executed example of multi-storey mill-design building, it is architecturally notable for its particularly unified design on a massive scale, and excellent use of space in a congested urban site. Past additions of an atrium and rooftop pavilion – and recent upgrades including a new and improved public entrance to the building, solar panels, and Australia’s first commercial Tesla battery system – demonstrate the site’s versatility as a vibrant hub for businesses in design, emerging technologies and social impact.
