Triple R – 102.7FM Studios
Architect: Six Degrees
North | N03
Since its inception as an educational broadcaster in 1976, Triple R has become Australia’s best-known community radio station, and continues to shape and inspire the culture of Melbourne with almost 15,000 subscribers and over 440,000 weekly listeners. The building houses the activities of the station’s 800 volunteers and 30 staff. It encompasses six studios, a 150-person live-performance space, an office, meeting spaces and amenities. The building is a former lingerie factory that was converted to its current use in 2005 in consultation with Six Degrees Architects. The station runs 24 hours a day, producing all content live on site and delivering to services that include 102.7FM, 3RRR-Digital, rrr.org.au, a live online stream via the website or 3RRR App, radio on demand, podcasts, and near-weekly station events. All of the station’s broadcasters, aside from the Breakfasters, are volunteers. Triple R is a not-for-profit organisation and its operations are independently funded via annual listener subscriptions, donations and sponsorship. Triple R’s broadcasters have a passion for what they present, as genuine music fanatics and devoted experts in their fields. Broadcasters, volunteers, and listeners alike are drawn to the station because of its unique, independent ethos and its commitment to quality public radio.
