Brew Tower Museum at Tribeca

Architect: George Wharton and William Pitt 1883

City of Melbourne | C21

Building Description

Founded in 1854 by a Scottish brewer, Victoria Brewery was a leader in the technological and scientific development of Australian brewing. Although Victoria Brewery closed down in 1983, and has since been enveloped into a residential development, architecturally the most significant and longest surviving brewery complex in Victoria.

The complex retains many distinctive elements from the brewery’s history, including the 1882 brewing tower in polychrome brickwork with brewing equipment and displays outlining the history of commercial beer brewing in Melbourne. The heritage-listed complex is surrounded by battlements, mansard French roofs and architectural features built by renowned colonial architect William Pitt.

In 2004, the site was redeveloped as ‘Tribeca’, a residential complex. Designed by Lovell Chen, the three original buildings were refurbished into apartments (The Cellars and Middle Tower buildings) and office space, museum space, and a penthouse (the Old Brew Tower).
