Cox Architecture Studio

Architect: COX Architecture, 2014

City of Melbourne | C32

Building Description

This project was undertaken as an opportunity to rethink the studio’s approach to deign. It’s people asked, how do we want to work together? How do we balance the needs of individuals and the desire to generate a more social, collective work experience? The critical issue was to strike a balance between dedicated, specialist functional areas (assigned for model-making, desktop publishing, administrative staff, IT support and formal meetings) and the need to create a sense of common, public space. The ethos underpinning the project is best represented in the creation of a central ‘events space’ for key activity. This open ‘box’ creates an internal connection between floors and reflects the intention to promote curiosity and increase the opportunity for staff to come together. Adjacent to this focal point is a Michelin-class commercial kitchen living a long, communal bench. This bench is crafted from reclaimed Oregon floor joists, rescued from the site, which as been up-cycled to create another, more informal gathering space suitable for either work or rest. The outcome provides for both the heart and the head with equal facility.
